Reflections on Motherhood
The last few nights (or actually early mornings) I’ve been staying awake and thinking about motherhood. I know it will be challenging, rewarding, frustrating, and amazing. So I wanted to list out the things that I want to be sure to do for my future children. Here I go!
As a mother I promise…
…to set a godly example
…to teach the Truth
…to show you the amazing love of Christ
…to say “I love you” everyday
…not be overbearing or controlling
…to be a friend when you need one
…to care for your physical and emotional needs
…to encourage you
…not to be overprotective
…to support decisions you make
…to forgive and forget
…to be your life cheerleader
…to hug and kiss you every day
…not discipline out of anger
…to encourage open communication
…to guide you
…to help you enjoy your childhood
…not to be overly critical
…to be a shoulder to cry on
…to offer a listening ear
…to pray for you everyday
…to make you laugh
…not to force you into things
Lastly, I promise I will make mistakes as a mother, but through God’s grace and forgiveness He will give me the strength to learn and continue on and for you to grow up just fine in spite of my short comings.
Things in miniature
We started baby shopping last weekend. I researched baby gear, created a registry at Babies R Us. But I have to say that my favorite thing about baby shopping is finding everything in miniature, especially the clothes. Miniature sweaters, dresses, shoes, tiny socks, little pants…they’re all so cute because they’re miniature!
Last weekend we went to Baby Gap. I picked up a tiny pair of leggings and freaked at the price of $15 for this tiny piece of clothing. Next we went to Old Navy and off their clearance rack tiny sweaters, onesies and dresses were selling for a mere $2! That’s more like it.
For those of you who know me, you’ll know that pastel pink is not my favorite color, so I’m not going to buy a bunch of pastel pink stuff for my daughter. Unfortunately it seems that at least 80% of the baby girl clothing on the market is in pastel pink. I think my daughter will be clothed in pastel greens and yellows…
Clothes are probably the easiest things to shop for and the most fun. We will need to start stocking up on all the other baby gear though, like the crib, car seat, play yard… By the way, if you’re looking for a good resource on baby gear, check out the book: Consumer Reports Best Baby Products. It’s the best!
Belly Week 18
Okay, bad picture, but whatever… The past two days I’ve woken up and realized that my belly was lopsided. Probably because I was sleeping on my left side so the baby gravitated to the left of my body. It’s crazy though to look down and see that the bump is off center, then to watch it gradually shift back to the middle as the morning goes on.
UPDATE on the Name Game: After much discussion, we’re rethinking the baby’s first name. Currently the only name we both really like is Gabrielle. Whether we’ll end up using that for a first or middle name is still up for debate. Know a good name? Let me know by posting a comment.
The Name Game
People have been asking me if we have a name picked out yet for our baby girl. We have a first name, but are still debating on a middle name and looking for help!
First Name: Kyra (K-EAR-AH)
Middle Name: Currently debating Gabrielle
Suggest a middle name by posting a comment! Here’s what we’re looking for.
- Nothing that starts with a C or K
- We would like it to be somewhat Biblical based
- Nothing that ends with the “ah” sound
It’s a Mini Maisie!
I thought we wouldn’t be able to tell the sex of the baby until at least 20 weeks. Not so, you can actually see things (or see no thing) at 17 weeks. Today we had another ultrasound, and we’re having a girl! My reaction? “Hum, that’s good.” Luke’s reaction? “WHAT?!”
Okay, honestly we wanted a boy. But I’m alright with a girl. Luke’s still getting use to the idea though. We’re just thinking of the next 18 years. The drama, the clothes, the boys, the proms, the wedding… (Need to stop now before I have a panic attack) I am looking forward to having a daughter to hang out with and love on. I’ve also heard that girls are easier as toddlers as well, so that’s a good thing.
We’ve created a baby registry for those of you just itching to get out there and buy pink things. Hopefully the registry will help guide your shopping… The link to our registry is on the right side of the blog under “Links”.
Sleepless Night
It’s currently 6am. I don’t think I’ve been up at 6am in almost a year! Actually I woke up this morning at 4:20am. It’s not uncommon for me to wake up in the middle of the night or wee hours of the morning, since us pregnant women have to pee often. Unfortunately, I just could not go back to sleep. I love my sleep, and when I don’t have enough sleep bad things happen to the people around me. Pre-pregnancy I could combat my daytime fatigue with double shots of espresso. Now, there’s no solution (besides just sleep) to help my tired body through the day. Come to think of it, there will be no caffeine help for at least the next year and a half! I apologize in advance to all who run into me on a sleepless day.
